Reflection of novel The Light Between Oceans

The story is about what happened when good people made bad choice, and what can people do for love. Tom Sherbourne is a soldier who survived from the Western Front. He accepts a job about being the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock; an isolated island far from the coast of Western Australia. Nobody can live on the island; except the lightkeeper and his family. Tom meets his true love, Isabel, on the mainland before he reports for duty. His isolated, wounded heart warmed by Isabel’s radiant smile and sparkles in her eyes.

After the wedding, they absorb in their happiness. Before long, Isabel hopes to have a baby eagerly. Unfortunately, two miscarriages and one stillbirth are what they get. Isabel can’t help sobbing for whole day. One day, when she is grieving for her loss; she hears a baby’s cries on the wind suddenly. Tom and Isabel find a boat was washed up on shore. In the boat is a dead man and a crying baby. Tom wants to report to superiors immediately, but Isabel says no. She is fascinated by the baby girl; believe this is God’s decree: sending the baby to compensate her loss. With strong hesitation, Tom agrees not to report the baby’s existence eventually. They claim this baby for their own, and name her Lucy. However, when Lucy is tow years old, they come back to the mainland, and find out there is still someone related to Lucy. Her biological mother, Hannah, who firmly believes that her daughter still alive.

When I was reading this novel, I needed to stop reading and soothing my emotion several times. Because the author is such a great storyteller. Her words make me want to laugh, shout, or cry with these characters. The first time Tom saw Isabel, I could see the reborn hope in his eyes. I could feel the same excitement when Isabel landed at Janus Rock to start her new life. I watched Lucy’s growing happily with Tom and Isabel. When Isabel was forced to return Lucy to her biologic mother, I knew it was right, but still shared the heartbroken, angry, and despair with Isabel. Although it was Tom, who couldn’t conceal the truth anymore and gave away the secret that led to the separation. However, I understand what burden Tom carried, and how much he loves Isabel. But some people, they just can’t lie. They need to do the right thing, or they will suffer from their conscious every day

The main point I want to say is that the author did a great job to make all the characters alive. The description skill in this novel also give me such a wonderful impression. It seems I actually lived on Janus Rock, shared the same sunlight, breeze, the voice of the surf with Sherbourne family. I recommendThe Light Between Oceans to those people who are looking for a beautiful story and need to have a good cry.
